hi...

i need some advice...

i am looking to move away from shared hosting packages and onto something a little more hardcore. i have a about 20 sites in total, and admin'ing 20 separate hosting plans is becoming a pain in the backside.

All my sites are currently with Supanames (Linux Mid Package)

but i am thinking of upgrading to this
http://www.supanames.co.uk/virtual-private-servers/linux/value

after some more research i have discovered this
http://www.unitedhosting.co.uk/resellers.php (startup package)

and i really dont know which to choose? main pros and cons for both are

Supanames have huge webspace compared to unitedhosting.
Supanames have unlimited data monthly bandwidth, unitedhosting is limited.
Supanames is a hell of a lot cheaper.

unitedhosting have SSL as part of the package, Supanames don't but you can add your own cert (extra cost).
unitedhosting allows for own-branded nameservers (eg ns1.ns2/.yourcompany.com ), so no one knows im a reseller of them, Supanames dont do that.

Also, Supanames say their service is superior as it is a Virtual Private Server (VPS). But UnitedHosting say theirs is better as its not VPS, they run each site in a chroot jail... what?.. which is better?...

i have no idea of what a chroot jail is.. so i dont know which is better?
(i have played them off against each other to see what their sales patter is like and now im more lost).

Please help!!
what would you choose and why?

+1 for United Hosting - I do have the top tier package in the reseller offering due to needs.

The UH support and speed of this host is second to none.

Almost desktop like responsiveness in the Modx manager.

but what makes one say a VPS is better and the other say a chroot is better?

Not got a clue - it just works!

Try posting on the United Hosting forums, or drop a line to their sales dept? Which is what I did when I was at the stage you are.

i did mate, lol...

i have been going back and forth between them showing what the other provider has said... and its made me MORE confused..

i have been with SN for years, i have never had a problem, always fast websites, loads of webspace, loads of bandwidth/data transfer rate and very cheap!! but then they will never offer SSL or even SSL support. and will always have SN branded namedservers

its a hard one..

i cant even find anything on google about the whole VPS vs chroot Jail debate to allow me to half decide what plan is better!
 Huh

Another +1 for United Hosting. I also have the reseller account. Truly superb support, near 100% uptime and the excellent control panel (Ensim) are the reasons I would recommend them.

UH run PHP as a cgi; while this means that PHP runs slightly slower since the PHP process has to be initialised with each page, it has the benefit of providing far greater security on shared hosting and gives you the ability to configure php.ini on the fly. This is the reason why UH websites on shared hosting can verified as PCI compliant - very important for ecommerce.

In practice I find modx sites run quickly on their servers, not as quick as on the dedicated servers I use but very good for shared hosting.

Zi: thanks for that... good reading (even if a little over my head),

but whats the best type of plan?
Which would you choose if you had to??

So far i have not found any document compairing both types of hosting, so im finding it hard to choose as the pros and cons for each i feel are big.
