I have a TV variable of input type "URL", when editing a page using this template occasionally the selector goes blank (eg it was set to "http://" and it becomes blank outed) and the domain.com becomes $vdomain.com  (eg a "$v" is added to the front of the URL)

This doesn't happen every time, but it has happened several times.

I'm switching the input type to "text" unless someone can tell me how to fix this problem, not a deal breaker at this point, but not as robust a protection against novice content editors.
