Finally Upgrading
A year ago this week I sat alone in an empty office building on Martin Luther Kind Day working away at converting our old static frame-based site to a brand-spankin' new Content Management System (which is a heck of a lot better than the community service everyone else got suckered into).
Well, that was a year ago and in the ever changing world of the wide web a year can be a very long time. Today that poor CMS, after having endured 365 days of forking, hacking and butchering, is getting to be about retirement age. So once again it seems that there will be at least one light on in the office this Monday. But this time around I'll be upgrading our site to MODx and I have happily left behind my forking, hacking and butchering ways in favor of plugging, extending and moduleing modulating modularizing. And since I'm on the development team, if I ever get that hacking itch, I can always sneak a few lines of code into the next release.
So far, the process of moving to MODx has gone amazingly smoothly (and this is no small site, we're talking about over 2,000 pages). But everything seems rosy until the rubber meets the road, right? The true testing of the flexibility and simplicity of MODx will happen over the next week. Tune in next time for "MODxcellent, Smithers" or "An angry MOBx."
