This might require a rethinking of the structure of MODx's site managment, but...

Could we get a simplified file managment area possibly as a separate file tree in the document tree. Something that would show strictly the content uploaded by the site editors. Then all uploaded files would go there.

I think we should still have the current file managment for snippets, templates, and other inner working stuff. But haveing a special area to keep the content separate would be helpful for ease of use.

For example: If they could just upload a folder of pics and then create a gallery page which points to the new picture folder in the file tree. It might simplify some things.

Using podcasts or any embeded pics on documents would be easier to manage I think if they didn't have to burrow down into the file structure and have access to deleting snippet files, template images, and other such operational files.

Anyone thought of this? IF this is a bad idea according to the programming gurus then just delete this suggestion I guess.

I would like to second this request. MODx already has a decent "file manager" for the MODx content in the database. Why not use the same functionality to display the files that are uploaded to the server? In fact, here's a (maybe not so) radical idea: why not have the assets show up as a folder in the same document tree as everything else? That may be ideal in some ways. When you go into the assets folder, you would be able to edit text files directly, in the main frame of the interface. You'd be able to rename files, move them around, and all that jazz. I like that idea. If you did that, the assets folder would be a special folder compared to the others in terms of the back end programming, but on the front end, it would integrate the two types of content (database and files) seamlessly.

This sounds very much along the lines of some of the changes being implemented for the MODx 0.9.7.

There is a file management tree being added which will be accessible in a similar way to the main document tree but also there will be the ability to add static resources to the main document tree as well - at least, that's my handle on the changes so far - haven't really had time to roadtest some of the new additions to 0.9.7 yet :)
