Playing the Silktide SiteScore Game

Author: Ryan Thrash | Posted on 06-Feb-2006 at 09:29 pm

Admittedly, it can be maddening ... playing the Silktide game. Their mysterious rating system is unforgiving. Miss a validating page here or there, and all of the sudden you'd better change those vacation plans for that Buckingham Palace and Big Ben visit because you're headed to jail in Brittain, bub.

In reality though, Silktide's SiteScore is worth paying attention to, if for no other reason than providing a quick check-up over things you can control and change quickly (especially if you use a great CMS like MODx ... wink, nudge, say no more!). They've done a great job with at least semi-objectively rating sites, and their reports provide helpful insight into your site.

I applaud Silktide for their efforts and for providing a free service which, due to growing popularity, I'd guess sucks down more processor cycles and bandwidth than they originally anticipated. They take many factors into account – from search rankings, to site speed, to visitor ratings, to the way your site is built, to who knows what other mysterious criteria. While search rankings take time to build (having a project that's growing in popularity like MODx sure helps in that regard) and visitor rankings are cumulative over time, the other areas are things you pretty much can quickly change if they're not up to snuff. And you should.

Keep at it long enough, and you might even pop into the Top 10 list, where the MODx site has been fortunate to reside for a while. At the time of the posting of this blog in fact, modxcms.com happened to be on top of the game as the #1 rated site out of "113,219 websites tested so far". I bet that changes fast!

Proud to be a MODx user ! by briggsys 07-Feb-06 03:36 AM
Congratulations !!!!!

We are at #670 with 8.7, just trying to catch up :)

This goes to show how good MODx is a CMS.

If someone who is not a web desinger or devloper and has NO SQL, PHP or CMS experince can build a website that scores:

Design - 9.8
Accessibility - 10
Experience - 9.4

This is testimony MODx is a Top Notch application !

Just need to work on vistor rating and marketing (hint hint) :)

#1 is no small achievement, great work !

Indeed Silktide is a very interresting concept, I'd like to learn more about how they rate websites, I think they have a bright future ahead with their SiteScore Enterprise service...

And the runner-up comment: by andreasviklund 07-Feb-06 08:03 PM
I can't believe that you pushed me down to #2! One person alone, against a whole community, where is the honour and glory with that? =)

Anyway, being at the top ten shows that you know your code extremely well. And the SiteScore test is indeed great, I can't wait for 2.0 which will come in a few months!

Congratulations, I hope that I will be able to stay up there with you for yet some time.

WOW, what a change! by JMorris 13-Feb-06 11:00 AM
Now I'm starting to see why MyWebResource got bumped down to #5.

The MODx Application and Community has grown leaps and bounds since my last evaluation. You all are doing a fantastic job here. Keep up the great work!

I think I may have just found my second favorite CMS.

Best wishes from the XOOPS camp,

JMorris

A review of Silktide Sitescore by Leezig 21-Mar-06 03:50 AM
There is a review of Silktide's Sitescore by a Brian Robson to be found here :

http://www.pgts.com.au/pgtsj/pgtsj0412c.html

It offers a comparison of 8 different sites examined by the tool before concluding that Sitescore is "patchy and by no means mature, but it's a step in the right direction".

Anyone got any thoughts on this?
